Malvan food

There is a huge variety of food items one can enjoy here.

Our favorite was the Rice Ghavan & Coconut garlic chatni. It is made with rice batter that needs to be prepared overnight. Most homestays serve this.

Ole kaju (wet cashew) usal sabzi & Fodniche Bhaat (Rice preparation).. and yes solkadhi.

We are fans of Kokum Coconut combination, the famous maharashtrian drink 'Solkadi' and downed glasses of it with every meal. The best part is that every home stay and hotel has their own style of preparing this and it was fun to try it at each hotel.

I also tried the truly unique Cashew fruit and karvand purchased from the local bazaar and absolutely loved it. They sell them as easy as 3 for 10 Rs. The yellow is ripe one and can become overripe pretty soon. Special care needs to be taken when eating these as the seed oozes an acid which can cause peeling of your skin and red spots on clothes.

The local bazaar was just amazing with local women selling brown rice, kokum, flowers of all types and betel nuts.

Shops also sell aam papad, famous malvani katta masala, kokum sherbet, flour for making Ghavan, Amboli.. Make sure to grab them for your trip back home.
I purchased tons of the stuff plus 500 gms of soft cashew 'ole kaju' that is very much found only in this and other Konkan regions.

Tip: Count the pieces of cashew they tell you they are selling. There is quite a bit of trade and tradecraft happening on this as its almost 3Rs per piece

I picked up some of the local Khaja sweet for my office colleagues, its a unique taste of spice and sweet

My husband does enjoy his time trying all the variety of thalis that are offered.

That's Fish thali with Paplet.. aka Pomfret

Trying his hand at Crab thali with the pliers..

not to judge the picture, the food was delicious indeed.. !
