Malvan - Tsunami Island & Dolphin Safari

Malvan is a vast region and a weekend trip would be unfair to truly enjoy this beautiful landscape. We wanted to enjoy beach and have a relaxed trip while still exploring the recommended tourist spots. Out of the stay of 4 nights, we did everything from parasailing, Dolphin watching, beach hopping, riding bikes on empty lanes, star gazing, loads of restaurant visits and even fort visit!

Tsunami Island, Golden Rock, Dolphin Point, Vengurla region beaches

Tsunami island trip is the one where you can do all these activities in one go and may end up wanting more. While travelling from Tarkarli to Deobaugh beach, you can find multiple individuals who waive and ask you to stop your ride. They are agents looking to ask if you have already been to Tsunami island or have experienced the water sports. Any agent is fine as long as they are all locals. They all inter-operate and run some common boats to get you to Tsunami island.

Tarkarli has a pristine white sand beach with crashing waves on the right side of the town and a calm serene river flowing on the left with boats anchored and coconut and palm tree lagoons. The river side of Tarkarli has a jetty which operates covered boat rides (both sharing and private) from early morning 7 AM. They take you along a fixed path at cost of 1200 Rs for two individuals covering 9 tourist points.

We reached by 8 AM near Tarkarli jetty, through an agent the homestay owner had recommended. Immediately, at the jetty, I got to glimpse closeup lot of kingfishers and fishes in the shallow waters. The tide drives the flaura and fauna as well as tourism of this region.

With the morning sun shining brightly on our boat, we left towards the first point, Crocodile point with lighthouse. It is said so as the entire range of hills in this region look like a giant crocodile.

From this place, we could see where the river meets the ocean known as 'Sangam point where the Arabian Sea meets the Karli River' There are many sandbars in this area..
Right ahead of this on another sandbar are migratory birds in the count of hundreds and it was spectacular.

Moving further, we experienced some fantastic dolphin watching out in the open sea. We could hear them making the huffing noise as they spurted water out.

Tip: The boat rides are usually shared by more than one family. If you are looking to spend longer time to search and watch the dolphins, find a boatman who can do a solo trip for you in advance !

The region beyond Tarkarli is Vengurla. As per the guide one can reach only via boat, but that is not true, You can reach via road following the coastal path. Vengurla region has many beaches like Bhogwe, Nivti and so on.

Boat ride ends at Nivti showing the Golden rock which is an old rock formation in a scenic location.
Here we got to view a lone Brahminy Kite atop the cliff guarding its nest.

Then on our return it was time for some Parasailing ! It was grand, flying over all the sand bars overlooking all the beaches with 360 view. The charges are fixed with 1200 Rs per couple and 400 Rs if you want to be dipped in the water and fly again ! Must do adventure..
Here is us,

The boat ride halts at Tsunami island allowing some rest and time for more fun activities. The guide says the island was formed in 2006 tsunami.. Some defer on this.. It's a small island with no trees but lots of crabs and some shacks. Either ways, this island is perfect for all water sports. The shacks here are built high above the ground as every day the tide waves come up and submerge the land upto 3 feet.

Packages of 3 rides for 500 Rs are the norm. This includes Jet ski, Banana ride and another speed boat ride called as sofa bumper ride. We opted for the more quiet and personal Kayak to watch all the birds near the island at a more closer look and travel at our own pace. The ride was amazing because we could get upclose to see some of the migratory birds.

Kayak cost is 100 Rs per hour per person

During the day, the sun is pretty harsh on the island which has little shade available. We had planned to do the kayaking in evening to avoid this, however, the fare of trip from Tarkarli jetty onto this island is 500 Rs. If you plan to do so, note that you need to reach atleast by 4PM as return back would be around 6 PM to avoid the high tide.

We wrapped up the evening marvelling the ocean and watching the sunset at Wayari beach, talking long walks right upto the end of the beach, watching our steps disappear with each wave...
