Leh - Leh Palace - Shanti Stupa

[26 July 2014]:
To my fellow travellers, for touring distant lands like Leh, it is best to have Local Transportation who know the roads, conditions of the roads, when to reach or leave to avoid suddenly existent waterfalls, etc. We had no such booking and were hoping to find someone after reaching the hotel. We did find a young chap sitting in the vegetable garden the day we reached.

This driver had an old Eco. Which was just fine for the 3 of us. We left to visit the Leh Palace. This place has some panoramic amazing views of the city. It survived the downpour and landslides of 2010 disaster. Word of caution, do carry an individual torch light with you at all times while in Leh. Here at the Palace, most of it is under darkness and you would really need to navigate your way.

These are few of the amazing pictures taken from my iPhone 5 !

Taxi prices in Leh are fixed and are humongous. Out of 6 days trip, total expenses for Taxi : everything else was; 3:2. We did have the printout for the Taxi prices which are rated as per the destination. Example, Leh to Shanti Stupa cost 700 Rs. Doesn't matter how many people, it is priced as per the vehicle chosen. This price list gets updated each year and is released on the internet Travel sites as well.

Shanti Stupa - We reached in time for the sunset. The sun-kissed golden clouds hovering like cotton balls placed over pink barren mountains, changing shape with the winds bellowing strongly, the trees swaying, and in distant land, the snow capped Stok range, the clouds below intense dark blue waiting to burst, all of it slowly covering under the golden shade before turning the deep dark for another night.
The memory still sends a chill down my body, the cold wind standing at the Stupa and watching this glory at such a height, Buddhist hymns and prayers being sung making us humans feel being present in the most beautiful place ever and being the most luckiest to be here..

We wrapped up the night with view of a million twinkling stars and some delicious Kashmiri food with lots of Apple Juice.

At nights, there are no street lights in lanes slightly away from the main bazaar. You need a torch to find your way and protect yourself from rain puddles, ferocious street dogs, other animals, drunk men, vehicles and open sewers. Leh is like any other city, just with less electricity and great natural scenery.

End-- Day 1. Hope you enjoyed reading this !
